Freelander Td4 Engine Bay Diagram

  1. I have been looking through the RAVE manual and can't find a description or drawings for the TD4 induction system, unless I'm looking in the wrong place. Does anyone know if there is one?
  2. It's not a complicated induction system. What are you trying to find out?

Never really thought about this, but there aren't any decent diagrams out there.

blue lines : air in pre-turbo
orange lines : air in post-turbo
"13" be where the egr unit sits
intercooler hoses don't look to be included

  5. Wanting to do some mods on mine and wanted to see the layout to see if anything important would be affected by what I want to do. Because I've already cut sections out of my airbox when getting my injectors out I'm thinking of some extreme modding to eliminate the airbox altogether. I want to have a look at a schematic before taking everything apart. I can see that there's a cold air feed direct into the airbox but I can't see how the intercooler is plumbed in.

That's a start Mike, thanks. Doesn't show the intercooler plumbing though. Where did you find it?

  6. You posted while I was composing my last post hd3. Thanks. That's a bit clearer. There's an intake mod mentioned in your sig. What is that?

EDIT: Just noticed there's a link lower down in your sig which I just looked at. Unfortunately none of the pictures in that thread show up.

can been seen easily on the motor
hose from turbo be at bottom of engine .. goes into intercooler at right
( as you face the engine bay )
hose comes out at left .. then up and right .. connects to plastic tubing
then another flexi hose to the egr unitpage 2 .. my pics are still there..
    https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/intercooler-problem-mod.126484/page-2

    BGH's non-displaying pics ..
were same principal .. but .. very tidy .. very cool show ..
polished alloy .. painted engine cover .. etc etc ..
( i might have a copy on my comp
( will post if i find it

    BUT ...
he didn't allow for air-intake heat buildup ..
so .. to negate that issue ..
be sure to attend the process of insulating the ducting from engine bay heat

  10. The air box/filter housing is the first stage of the air into the engine. The coldish air feed into the air box/filter housing isn't sealed as far as ECU monitoring goes.
The MAF is the first stage of ECU monitoring, which is engine side of the air filter, and before the turbo.
The turbo boosted air then travels through a metal pipe, round the back of the engine, then forward over the bell housing. This then turning onto a rubber pipe and feeding the near side of the intercooler, which is in front of the rad. The cooled air exits the intercooler on the near side of the engine bay via another rubber pipe, and onto the plastic plenum, running across the front of the engine. A rubber 90° elbow pipe takes the air into the EGR valve, which then goes into the plastic inlet manifold. The air then enters the engine via 8 inlet runners and on into the 8 ports in the head.

The intake system between the MAF and and ports has to remain a closed system, or boost will be lost.

This is about the best you can do, while still keeping the factory air filter and housing. ;)

i thought about doing away with the factory filter housing ..
maybe a long cylindrical filter / housing at front ..

( no idea of accurate space there .. with the hood-bonnet down
( also lost a web-link to an outfit that supplied
( any type of engine air filter housing you could imagine

then a curved horn tube to the maf inlet ..
the maf inlet 'grate' be another restrictor to see to

    runs fine as is :)
prefer to consider a side exit exhaust with a de-cat operation .. first

  13. Thanks for all the info. My main misconception was that I thought the MAF was somehow BEFORE the air filter. I was thinking that half of the plenum could be discarded but I see how other people have done it in the pictures provided and it's something like I was picturing in my head. I still have it in mind to do away with the filter housing but need to think of a way to catch the vent from the crankcase filter. I've been modding the EGR valve from my spares car today and I can mess about with that car to my hearts content so I'll see what I can come up with.
  14. The crankcase breather goes directly into the inlet ports. It doesn't touch the air filter box/ housing at all. The air filter is outside of the monitoring area, so you can do whatever you like to it. Having a hole in the side, won't affect the way the engine runs, or alter the monitoring of the air into the engine.
  15. Ah. I thought it went into the filter housing. Makes life a little easier then. Cheers.
  16. hi can anyone tell me what number 18 hose is called please .
  17. The part is called a "duct-cold-air-intake" - the part number is DHN000050 -and it comes with the hose and the plastic clip as an assembly for ~£55
    https://www.johncraddockltd.co.uk/dhn000050-duct-cold-air-intake.html

When I redo mine I'm going to cut off the coiled wire hose, reuse the plastic clip-on part and connect it to the intake ducting with a silicone hose, possibly even a muddy mods kit. Maybe you could go for the silicone hose? ~£28 on ebay
